Medical Coding: Short-Term Pain for a Long-Term Gain
People often ask me why I switched from teaching a six-week Saturday medical coding course to a three-day (consecutive day) course offered on the weekends. Well, when I used to teach the Certified Professional Coder CPC® course over a duration of six weeks, we would meet every single Saturday (six consecutive Saturdays) and I would teach for four hours a day. If you do the math, that’s a total of 24 hours of lecturing!
The students received all the information they needed to pass their board exams and that worked wonderfully for a long time, but things soon changed along the way. There was a need to become more efficient. There was a better way.
Expanding Our Horizons
Over time, my name began to get out there a little bit and before I knew it, I had people calling me for instruction from other cities. We were receiving requests from California, Colorado, Florida and even Great Britain, India, Alaska and Hawaii.
I couldn’t really afford to be locked down to Dallas-Fort Worth area for six weeks in a row anymore if I wanted to go and help other people. Dallas-Fort Worth wasn’t the only city that needed help with passing the Medical Board Exam and/or entering the brand new career of medical coding. So I reformatted the curriculum to be 11 hours a day for three consecutive days — all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The Benefits of a Three-Day Structure
The new structure has worked phenomenally — not just for myself, but also for the students. Why? Because it was difficult for the students to commit to the program for six consecutive weeks. Things come up. Life happens. You never know when your child is going to get sick and you’ll have to miss a Saturday. It kind of throws off the entire program and you end up having to sit out the entire course then try to do it again next time.
With a three-day course, on the other hand, it really helps students manage their time. It’s a very valuable format because my students have families. They have friends. They have jobs (and responsibilities that go with them), so they need to be able to get back to that. The three-day format is all about respecting their time and valuing their time, as well as freeing me up to help other students in other cities.
So, in a nutshell, that’s why we changed from a sixth-week to a three-day structure. My students can basically enjoy six weeks’ worth of medical coding lecturing in just three days. Best of all, they’ll be prepared to take and pass the exam on the first try.
