5 Ways Medical Coders Can Start the Year Strong
We’ve covered how medical coders can end the year strong on our blog in the past.
But what if you want to get started on the right foot?
Here are a few tips to ensure that 2023 is your best year as a medical coder yet.
1. Get Updated Books
There are a variety of medical coding books every coder and biller should have and these get updated regularly. If you’re using an old version, it could hinder your efforts in several ways:
- Your codes could be less accurate
- You could miss important industry changes
- You risk unwanted errors or mistakes
If you have the latest books, however, that will be one less thing to worry about this year.
2. Expand Your Credentials
Looking to get the most out of this year? Expand your alphabet soup! A new credential not only expands your earning potential, it sets you up for success in your existing position (and looks great on your resume). Whether for your current position or a new one, expanding your set of credentials doesn’t hurt.
3. Improve Your Work Environment
If you’re stressed or uncomfortable during your day, see if there are any ways to make your environment more comfortable. Put on soothing music, diffuse essential oils and ensure there isn’t harsh lighting. A comfortable chair is also extremely valuable.
4. Expand Your Network
If your professional network is a little lacking, joining a medical coding Facebook group or similar social media organization can get you connected with peers and potential future employers. You can ask questions, get exam advice and so much more.
5. Stay Connected!
At the end of the day, leaning on others will maximize your potential. In addition to joining networking groups, be sure to follow relevant medical coding blogs, podcasts, video channels and other resources to stay on top of industry changes and news in the industry.
