  • I had been looking into medical coding for the last year. I had narrowed the decision down to online courses with either the AAPC or AHIMA. Soon after... read more I became even more indecisive after researching both organizations due to mixed reviews. Then in March I came across one of Ms. Ortega's YouTube videos. After watching the first video, she had me hook, line and sinker!!!! This woman is truly a God Send!! Like everyone now reading these reviews, I thought this is crazy amazing!! OMG this is just too good to be true! How am going to become this Go To medical coder in only three days??? Please believe me when I say, it is truly possible. This is the real deal! During the months following up to the three day course, I had watched all of Ms. Ortega's videos....more than once...and took notes. The course only costs $1280 and MCA works with you in regards to a payment plan. After registering for the CPC course, MCA mails their students pre-work. The pre-work will take roughly 20 to 25 hours to complete and it is truly essential when taking the course. I attended the course in Dallas, TX at the end of July. We had about 95 students attending the class. One student had even flown all the way from Hawaii just to attend! I'm not going to lie, the course is intense but you will learn a vast amount of information in only three days. Ms. Ortega and her MCA staff are truly amazing!!!!!!!!! She is an explosive powerhouse of coding knowledge and breaks everything down for you by having you work from the ground up. I can not stress enough how important it is to complete both the pre-work and homework. The completion of this work can either make you or break you on the board exam. Ms. Ortega also gives you interviewing tips along with helpful real world practice scenarios that will benefit you after you pass the exam. Now with the Dallas course, students are given an option of taking the board exam on the fourth day. I was one of those students who chose to take the exam on the fourth day. Unfortunately I did not pass the first time. It had absolutely nothing to do with Ms. Ortega and her classroom instruction. From what I've heard many students pass on the first try. Unfortunately I was not one of those students. I felt pretty good coming out of the exam room and thought I had at least passed with a 70 but to my dismay I missed it by three points. Three points!!!! You know what though....It's okay. AAPC offers one free retake!!! Thank you God!! After I found out the horrible news, I texted Ms. Ortega. She was extremely understanding and suggested I retake the exam within the month. For the next three weeks, I studied at least one hour everyday. I took the retake exam and a week later found out I PASSED!!!!!!! I'm still elated from the news and can't wait to continue on with my medical coding career!! So in conclusion if you feel beyond confident with taking the board exam on the fourth day then I say go for it but if you're someone who may need more time to study, I would suggest delaying the exam for a couple of weeks. I already have a coding certification but I was lacking the depth concept, listening to Mrs. Ortega explain cases, rationale answers finally a light bulb went off. All these years I’ve been hesitant to obtain my CPC...shame on me! I’m ready to go for CPMA next!! Do NOT waste your money on any other school, MCA is worth the investment!!!

Before I share... read more the news I have to tell the complete story as to why this is a big deal for me. Many of you know or have read my previous post about my recent success ( taking Mrs. Ortega’s 3 Day CPC prep course and passing the board exam on the 4th day ) through the Medical Coding Academy in January of this year. I had shared a little bit of my story about how I had taken the CPC exam a couple of times ( prior to attending Mrs. Ortega’s 3 Day CPC course ) and failed. What I didn’t say, was that i had already been working as a Medical Coder for roughly a year and a half. When I got hired I was made aware that I must have my coding certification within 1 year of employment or I would loose my job because the organization only wanted individuals that are certified . I was also made aware that once I became certified I would get a promotion. I took on the challenge because I was certain that I could get my certification within 1 year. At that time I was enrolled in a coding program at a local technical college. When I took the CPC exam for the first time and failed I was about 6 months into employment. This happened at the end of the year which meant tests were limited and most test sites were already at capacity. I waited about 3-4 more months before I re-took the CPC exam the second time and failed. At that point the pressure was really weighing heavy on me because I knew that I had to get that certification in order to keep my job and I was rapidly approaching my 1 year of employment/deadline. At my 1 year evaluation I was given an extension on getting my certification. That’s when I sought the Medical Coding Academy. You know the rest of the story but, I honestly feel like MCA was a blessing to me and I am/will be forever grateful the experience and the time/effort that Mrs. Ortega puts into her students. The great news that I want to share with you all is that I recently received my promotion and my supervisor gave me a “ shout out” this week at our morning huddle for my name being listed under the “Magna Cum Laude “ section of this months AAPC magazine ( was going to add the pic that I took of my name in the magazine but I don’t see the option to add an attachment/picture). It was a great feeling to be recognized and well worth the stress and anxiety. Lol.. Sorry, for the extensive post but, I felt like it was necessary and I hope that my story might encourage someone who’s in doubt or feeling discouraged. I also want to mention that I recently registered for the CPMA ( Certified Professional Medical Auditor) through MCA. Wish me luck and stay tuned for another successful story. Be blessed y’all!!

When I say she was heaven-sent I'm not kidding she was a blessing to our minds and she taught us what we needed to learn in 3 days at the medical coding Academy to be the best coders that we can be. She has opened our minds to a lot of things and I’m very blessed to say that GOD BLESSED US!!!! People, this lady was GOD sent to all of us. When it comes to teaching she is like no other. I, unfortunately, did not pass on my first try (due to my own anxiety), but I did as Mrs.Ortega asked and emailed her immediately. She was very responsive and willingly sent me the tools that I needed. I then sat for my test and passed on my next try with FLYING COLORS!!!!! She is excellent and you will NOT regret taking this course.
