5 Medical Coding Culture Tips

Every company wants a good culture. Unfortunately, it’s more difficult in healthcare than many other industries.

This is especially true as more and more people work remotely.

How do you create a good medical coding culture? Here are some tips:

1. Create Transparency

A transparent culture is one that has nothing to hide. When there is nothing to hide, everyone feels safe. When everyone feels safe, they do their job more effectively. You can start creating a culture of transparency by really trying to get to know the other coders in your company and help where you can. Servant leadership is one of the most appreciated forms of leadership and others will be inspired if you are vulnerable first.

2. Encourage Collaboration

The best ideas usually come from group efforts. If your team seems a bit divided or detached, encouraging collaboration can help improve the feel of day-to-day interactions. Ensure all relevant documents that everyone accesses are available to all and that there is always room for ideas and discussion. The more each employee feels like they can make an impact, the better for your culture.

3. Foster Improvement

Professional development doesn’t just help the individual—the entire company benefits from it. Therefore, encouraging medical coding employees to pursue additional education and/or certifications will benefit your company’s culture.

4. Ensure Comfort

Comfortable employees are productive employees. We’re talking literally, here. If there is a stipend for remote workers to use in their home offices, encourage them to use it. For in-office employees, make sure chairs are comfortable, lighting is at an appropriate level and that breaks are encouraged.

5. Establish Safety

Finally, the best cultures are ones where everyone feels safe. If you take nothing away from the other items on this list (or other articles you’ve read), if you establish safety, you’ll be on the right track toward a winning medical coding culture.
