5 (More) Scary Medical Coding Scenarios to Avoid

Don’t look now, but it’s already Halloween (again)! Last year, in honor of this spooky holiday, we decided to point out some things that scare use as medical coders.

Well, we’re back at it again with more spooky stories to help ensure you don’t make any of the same mistakes.

1. Rushing Through Tasks

Entering the wrong code is always a fear for medical coders. It comes with the territory. But if you’re rushing through tasks in order to get them done, this scary scenario can become an everyday occurrence. There’s no problem with being efficient, but make sure you’re being accurate.

2. Not Taking Breaks

Medical coders and billers can feel over their heads at times. But this is especially true if he or she isn’t taking breaks at least a few times a day. Try to schedule regular breaks through your day. It may feel counterproductive, but you’ll be sharper and more efficient if you’re in a good mental place.

3. Losing Track of Documents

Losing documents (or not even having access to them in the first place) is another nightmare scenario. Make sure you’re organized and ask for required documentation if you don’t have it already. Organization is key for medical coders.

4. Feeling Like An Imposter

Imposter syndrome affects all of us, but there are few places where this is more important than the complex world of medical coding. If you’re jumping into a medical coding job without prior knowledge or experience, you can feel like an imposter from the start. Instead, gain knowledge (and pass a certification exam) to empower yourself.

5. Dealing with Angry Supervisors

When it takes time to complete your tasks or you make a mistake (as we all do on occasion), it can lead to anger from supervisors or private practice owners who depend on your work for revenue. Don’t compromise your values or stay in an unhappy situation, but do improve your knowledge and organization skills to ensure you’re making supervisors satisfied with your efforts.
