Avoiding Billing Errors with Medical Coding Training

You see stories like it in the news all of the time: “Medical Coding Slip at TX Hospital Led to COVID-19 Billing Error.”

It’s a true article from September of this year and it goes to show the importance of medical billing and medical coding roles. Here’s a recap of what happened:

“Midland Memorial Hospital agreed to pay over $555,000 for a medical coding error that resulted in claims being sent out for reimbursement from the government even though patients did not have a primary COVID-19 diagnosis.”

It’s true that COVID-19 has complicated and expanded what medical coders and billers need to think about. But with the proper training (and an ear to the ground), it’s easier to avoid huge billing errors like this.

Let’s go over a few other ways to avoid billing errors:

1. Proper Training

First and foremost, you need to have the proper knowledge to avoid making mistakes with codes or bills. After all, how do you know if you’re doing a good job or not until it’s too late? Colleges and universities can be expensive, and there are medical coding companies out there that aren’t legit, so you need to choose your training carefully. At Medical Coding Academy, our students have a 98% pass rate for certification exams and usually thrive in whatever role they land.

2. Peer Support

Co-workers, friends and other peers are fantastic for emotional support, professional advice and knowledge support. Depend on these people to ensure you’re updated about the latest news in the industry. If you are an introvert or struggle with making friends in person, an online option like a Facebook medical coding group is a great way to get connected with peers in the medical coding industry.

3. Insightful Social Media Accounts

The right social media accounts can help you expand and update your medical coding knowledge without much effort on your part! Just make sure you identify the leaders in the industry and absorb all the content that you can. (Medical Coding Academy social media accounts are a great place to start… just sayin’.)

4. Videos

Finally, video content may be easier to absorb than written content for you. If that’s the case, be sure to check out Medical Coding Academy’s YouTube channel for regular videos about the topics in the industry that you need to know.
