How Medical Coders Reduce Risk
If there’s one thing common to all industries, it’s an element of risk.
In healthcare, however, it’s especially important because you’re dealing with people’s health (and lives).
So, where do medical coders come into play when it comes to risk? Here are a few ways they help reduce it:
1. Patients
For starters, coding directly impacts the patient, specifically when it comes to treatments. If codes are wrong, the treatment could be wrong, which could put the patient at risk. Medical coders can reduce risk for patients by focusing on accuracy, which can be improved through studying, memorization and taking the proper classes.
2. Doctors
Medical coders also reduce risk for doctors and their reputation by ensuring all coding is correct. In addition to treatment risks for patients, as mentioned above, doctors have their own credentials and careers to consider. Coders help them focus on doing their job, which is helping people medically.
3. Insurance
Insurance companies can also present a risk for healthcare organizations, especially when it comes to finances. Improper codes can result in improper bills and insurance issues. Delays could increase time before treatment and/or payment to the healthcare organization.
Reducing Risk with Medical Coding Education
As mentioned above, the best way to reduce risks in these three areas is to educate yourself and stay updated about the latest coding changes and updates. Stay tuned to medical coding blogs like this one, follow relevant medical coding social media accounts and join a social media group with your peers! With a little help, you can be one of the most accurate (and least risky) coders for your company.
