How to Prepare for a Medical Coding Audit

Audit. Few words stir up fear, anxiety and frustration like this one.

Unfortunately, they’re party of nearly every industry in some way. Fortunately, they’re an opportunity to improve, if you look at them the right way.

When it comes to medical coding, there are certain things you can do to prepare and ease your mind if you have a coding audit on the horizon.

Let’s discuss them.

1. Determine the Schedule

It’s difficult to prepare for something you don’t know is coming. The good news, however, is that many healthcare organizations schedule regular audits to maintain efficiency, safety and more. Yours could be annually, bi-annually, quarterly, weekly or even daily in some form. By knowing the schedule, you’ll be in better position for the audit.

2. Prepare What Will Be Audited

From MS-DRGs to volume per coder, knowing what will be reviewed will help you prepare better. This is true for both the period leading up to the review and your everyday responsibilities, as you know what your auditors will be looking for during the audit.

3. Find Out the Location

Today, it’s not uncommon for audits to be performed remotely, so check to see if it’s in person or remotely. Many employers will even give you a preference, so choose the location that will give you the most confidence in your audit results.

4. Be Ready for the Review

This means clearing your calendar, of course, but also being ready to answer any questions (or ask them yourself). The author may also have clarifying questions, or you may want to explore any recommendations further. Use this opportunity to improve before the next audit.
