4 Ways to Increase Your Medical Coding Knowledge This Fall
An anonymous person once said, “the man who graduates today and stops learning tomorrow is uneducated the day after.”
Regardless of whether you’re passed the certification exam or you’re a seasoned coder, you don’t want to lose the valuable medical coding knowledge you’ve gained.
As we approach fall and winter, it can be tempting to take things easy and go for a break when it comes to learning. But we recommend increasing your knowledge instead!
Here are four ways to increase or maintain your medical coding knowledge this fall:
1. Audibly
Podcasts have been gaining in popularity in recent years. In fact, we’ve already mentioned them several times on this blog as a resource for medical coding and billing students. One of the best things about podcasts? You can listen to them while doing something else, whether it’s driving, cleaning around the house or working out. If you’re looking for a good medical coding podcast, check out this blog post for some great suggestions.
2. Digitally
Maybe you’re not an auditory learner? That’s OK. There are several fabulous medical coding blogs, publications and knowledge centers out there that can help you stay sharp with your medical coding knowledge. Some of these are written by active medical coders who are working in the industry every day, so you know they’re going to be good. Here is another blog post with suggestions on good medical coding blogs that you can check out.
3. Physically
Every medical coding student needs three books: CPT AMA Professional, ICD-10-CM and HCPCS Level II. So you can start off by getting to know these three books like the back of your hand. Tabbing your books is a great way to do this. Additionally, you can look into the variety of other medical coding books out there to increase your knowledge. Get reading!
4. Remotely
Finally, you can increase your medical coding knowledge (or get knowledge for your first certifications) with medical coding online courses. Medical Coding Academy Online is a great resource for new and seasoned medical coding professionals alike. If you’re interested in earning your Certified Professional Coder CPC® certification from AAPC or Certified Coding Specialty-Physician certification CCS-P® from AHIMA, this is the route for you.
There are lots of different options when it comes to increasing your medical coding knowledge this summer. Choose the one that’s right for you!
