Common Questions About Medical Coding Exams

Life is full of questions. Do I want fries with my burger? What happened to the other sock in the laundry? What is the meaning of life? While we can’t really help you with any of these, we can point you in the right direction when it comes to medical coding.

Here are a few common questions about medical coding exams, as well as their answers:

How can I properly prepare for the exam?

In the past, your only option was to take a course at a college or university. Now, you have several options. At Medical Coding Academy, we specialize in three-day medical coding courses (ideal for learning a lot in a short amount of time) and we have an online course as well. Both are more affordable and efficient than typical college classes.

Can I take my exam at Medical Coding Academy?

MCA does not administer medical coding exams. We only give you the knowledge and products you need to successfully pass the exams (hopefully on the first try). To take the exam, you must go to an exam location approved by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).

How long is the medical coding exam?

There are two parts to the exam and you have approximately five and a half hours to take both parts. You have two hours and 45 minutes for the first part and two hours and 45 minutes for the second part as well.

Can I use any books or reference materials during the exam?

There are three books you can use to reference on your desk during the exam: the CPTA AMA, the ICD 10-CM and the HCPCS. We recommend you use a current year for each book.

What personal items are allowed during the exam?

You can use the above books, a whiteboard, a dry erase marker and a drink if you’d like. You must show your exam provider the whiteboard and possibly other evidence to ensure that you’re not cheating, however.

When will I receive my results?

You will usually have access to your exam results within one week of your exam.

Is the CPC the only certification exam that is offered?

No, there are quite a few other types of certifications available. Medical Coding Academy offers a variety of certification course options.

Are there online options or only in-person options?

Medical Coding Academy Online was one of the very first online options for medical coding students, and it’s the standard for online learning. In-person options are fewer in light of COVID-19, but you might be able to find some available.
