As the calendar approaches the end of the year, the temperature starts to drop. We all know this. But did you know that cold weather can limit your productivity? This applies to all industries, including medical coding. Whether you’re trying to study for your first medical coding certification exam or you’re a seasoned professional trying to get another certification, the chilly temperatures can have a negative impact on reaching your study goals.
Fortunately, we’re here to help. Here are a few medical coding studying tips for cold weather:
Tip #1: Study from home.
It may be tempting to grab a cup of coffee while you study or do your studying at a friend or family member’s house, but resist that temptation. You have fewer distractions at home and the familiar environment will make it easier to focus. Plus, many medical coding jobs are remote anyway, so this will prepare you for your life as a medical coding professional.
Tip #2: Warm yourself up.
Studies show that cold temperatures can make you less productive, especially if you’re female. Warm yourself up by either turning up the heat, making yourself a warm beverage (tea, hot cocoa or coffee) and grabbing a blanket. When you’re comfortable, you’re productive.
Tip #3: Listen to familiar music.
If you’re the type of person who can work while listening to music, make sure the music is familiar and not too fast-paced. Unfamiliar or intense music can make your brain work harder and you’ll feel more burned out while studying. Instead, listen to music that is familiar and has a slower pace. (Instrumental music is often a good choice.)
Tip #4: Take breaks.
Don’t push yourself too hard! This tip could apply to any time of the year, but make sure you mix in regular breaks with all of your studying.
Tip #5: Find a bit of sun.
Our bodies have different responses when exposed to natural light versus artificial light. When it comes to the former, your body releases more melatonin, absorbs more Vitamin D and is overall much more healthier, happier and productive. So make sure you are able to get some sunlight exposure—if not while you study, then during your breaks.
