It’s one of the first questions people ask when considering a career in medical coding: “How much do medical coders earn?” Well, thanks to some new survey numbers from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), now you can know exactly how much you can expect to earn in this fast-growing industry.
How Much Do Medical Coders Earn?
According to the survey from the AAPC, here’s how the 2018 medical coding salaries broke down (number noted is average salary per year):
- CPC: $54,401
- CPB: $52,333
- CRC: $61,295
- COC: $59,125
- CPMA: $66,886
- CDEO: $69,029
- CPPM: $69,835
- CPCO: $74,043
- Specialty: $60,238
- 2 Credentials: $61,880
- 3 Credentials: $68,016
So, what does this all mean? For starters, it means that a career in medical coding with just one credential can be very lucrative. But it also means that becoming multi-credentialed is a smart investment.
Why Medical Coding?

On the salaries, is this in the Dallas area? I live outside of Knoxville TN. How do I find out the salary range in my area? I am waiting for my package to ship and once I finish the CPC I want to do inpatient coding and auditing. I actually audit for the company I am employed with but only because my transcription job was phased out. Do you offer the CPMA homebase course as well? I am VERY interested in that since I’m already an internal compliance auditor
