At Medical Coding Academy, we’re all about preparing our students for passing their certification exams on the first try. But we don’t stop there. We want to ensure you’re in as good of a position as possible for your dream job so you can launch your medical coding career.
Whether you’ve recently passed your certification exam, your exam is scheduled or you’re just doing preliminary research, here are a few tips for finding a medical coding job.
1. Get A(nother) Certification
For starters, you need a medical coding certification. This is required for most medical coding jobs, but it also establishes your credibility in the industry. You don’t need to go to college, however. There are medical coding online options and in-person options that span a few days. Even if you already have one certification, adding another (more specialized) certification can enhance your job prospects—and increase your salary potential at the same time.
2. Refresh Your Resume
When was the last time you gave your resume an update? If you’ve recently gained a medical coding certification, it’s time to refresh it. But you also have to think about other elements of the job search, such as letters of intent and your portfolio. You don’t have to do it alone, however. A resume kit for medical coders can give you a head start. The one we have available at Medical Coding Academy, for example, includes all of the templates you’ll need, as well as a USB wristlet to store them all on.
3. Look in the Right Places
LinkedIn, Indeed and the AAPC are all great resources for job seekers, especially for positions in the healthcare industry. They’re all established employment platforms, meaning the vast majority of the roles you’ll find are legitimate, appealing and appropriately compensated. Resist the urge to take your job search to Facebook, Craigslist or another platform with a poor reputation. By looking in the right places and using an updated resume (like we talked about above), you’ll be in a great position for landing that medical coding job.
